4/7/2018 Service - Steve Kinnard/Ryan Erbe

Service: The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37)
-red road/bloody road - actually notorious dangerous road
-man was not only stripped and robbed but beaten and left half dead
-priest represented people before God - had to to be decsendant of Aaron
-scared - didn't trust man- thought he would Rob him - can think of if the man is dead can't touch him because he would become unclean
-levite - servant to the priest - holy people in Israelite
-could be thinking the same as the priest
-both had opportunity to live out the title of what they are - both focused on what the outcome would be
-had opportunity to do God's work but didn't want to tarnish there rep
-we do the same - we shy away from what Jesus would do
-Sirach - "two nation's my soul detests, and the third is not even a people. Those who live in Seir, and the Philistines, and the foolish people that live in Schechem"
-the hate for the Samaritans - similar to Nazis and Jew but not intense like Holocaust
-the Samartian in the parable is suppose to be the one that is suppose to be the bad guy - it's like Jesus talking to a Yankee fan (the lawyer) and then other Yankee fans are walking by (of course they are gonna help - preist and levite) but a red Sox fan walks by (of course he won't help because red Sox fans are horrible - Samaritan- but he helps) -"this is the ah-ha moment"
-how to be more neighborly - we are all neighbors - we can't choose our neighbors
-Shows mercy, shows love - what we have to do - "do like wise"
-Howard Thurman book - we allow three things that holds us back is: fear, deception, and hate
-the only thing that can defeat all these: love - Jesus
-dont make barriers - tear them down - don't divide - love one another - be the sledgehammer - be the difference maker
-love is the answer - Jesus is the answer
-church was and still is the most segregated time of day - goes against Jesus-"almost beyond redemption"
-jesus's love and light sees no color
-we are all the same - we are all made in the image of God
