"Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper." 1 Kings 19:11-12

Another devotional means another quick Bible Study. This verse comes from off the back of the story of Elijah running away from Jezebel who threaten his life. Elijah runs to Beersheba where he prays that God will take his life. Which God responded with sending an angel to smack him in the back of the head and said "get up and eat" (v. 4-5). The angel then came back a second time and told him the same thing and to leave Beersheba. Elijah then traveled 40 days and 40 nights (coincidence? I think not) to Horeb, which is also the mountain of God. God asked him what Elijah was doing and Elijah told him his problems, God told him to go outside for he was about to pass. Then we get the above verses, "Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper," (1 Kings 19:11-12). Then it repeated, God asked Elijah what he was doing and Elijah told him his problems (a repeat of the angel of God and God repeated themselves - poetic and shows the importance behind what the angel and God are doing and saying). God then told him to go back to the people that are trying to kill him and then we get the introduction of Elisha. God is funny and he really has a sick sense of humor, for me it is okay because so do I. God comes to us in several different ways and at different times. He comes to us through people, through angels, through fire, earthquakes, thunder, and wind, through dreams and sometimes he whispers to us. The whisper is a powerful thing, think about it. When someone whispers to you what do you do? Right! You lean in. You lean in order to hear the whisper clear or in general. It is the same reason why God whispers to us. He wants us to come closer and to lean in. his whisper brings us closer to him both literally and figuratively. We grow closer to him in our relationship, and we get more conditioned to his voice. Another thing with a whisper is usually a whisper is something important. If you whisper you usually do not want others to hear. Talking with God is the same. God sometimes wants to give a secret so he will whisper. Everything God says is important, sometimes he will yet it and sometimes he will be as quiet as a church mouse (slight pun intended). This whole whispering as soon as I heard it has always been one of my favorite things to tell people. We always have to be aware and ready. We have to recognize his whisper. The way we do this is constantly being in his Word and constantly praying and talking with him. We have to be conditioned to his voice. John 10:27-28 says, "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand." Isaiah 30:21 says, "Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ear will hear a voice behind you, saying, 'This is the way; walk in it.'" God comes to us in many different ways. Just to name a few he comes to us in his Word, through Jesus, through nature, through others, through music, through certain circumstances, through the Spirit, and through prayer. I told you, God has a sick sense of humor; he will come to us when we least expect and in the weirdest of situations and ways.

"Coincidence is God's way of remaining anonymous." Albert Einstein

Lord, thank you for your word. Thank you for your whisper and your voice. I pray that we daily get use to your voice everyday. I pray that when we whisper that we lean in and not leaning out. I pray that you continue to be with us. Allow your whisper to be loud in our ears and loud in our heart. Be with us always, and I pray for your love and grace. In Jesus's name I pray, Amen.
