“The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”” 1 Kings 19:11-13
God sometimes talks to us in a whisper to bring us closer to him, literally bring us closer. Think about it, we have to lean into a whisper in order to hear it. Sometimes we are listening for a loud voice, we are listening and looking for something to big to happen. We are under the perception that since God is a great big ultimate God, every thing he does is big. In a sense it is, but God can be subtle and not everything he does and will do will be followed with red flags and a loud bang. Sometimes the quietest of sounds are the loudest. God sometimes comes to us in a whisper in order for us to be brought closer to him. We have to quiet our outside surroundings in order to hear a whisper. We have to quiet our minds. We have to focus. We have to be able to have our ears open and eager and intently listen. So just because God is not yelling in your life or in your ear does not mean he is not there. He could be changing things subtly in your life. He could be whispering in your ear. He could be doing all this right now. So do not look for something big today, look and listen for the quiet. Block everything out and be focused on what God can be doing. Listen for the whisper and get close to God.
Lord, I pray that you are with us opening our minds and our hearts. Allow us to hear your whisper. Allow it to bring us close to you. Both figuratively and literally. Bring us in close and whisper in our ears. Allow us to grow in you and be with you. Quiet the outside noise. Quiet our doubts. Quiet our minds. Allow us to hear and focus on your soothing and calming voice.
