4/4/2018 Midweek - Steve Kinnard

Scripture: Luke 10:25-37 - live in the house of the Good Samaritan - picture the person - picture the amount of money used - picture the beaten - be like the Samaritan
How to study the Bible better - teaching midweek
-point 1: Read different translations - read it over and over again - get different things in a different translations - use different words and some ideas - understand it better
-read a little before and a little after to get all the context
-Live with the story
-point 2: context - immediate (above and below) -remote (whole bible)
-immediate- to see what is going on in the story/parable
-remote- to make sure the story/parable fits in the context of the whole bible - if it doesn't fit = not a good translation
-who is it happening to/who is the audidence/what is going on/what is being said/why is it being said/where is it happening
-Ask question - what moved you- find what moved then - ask what they see
-point 3: Background- research - can't get from just reading bible - study Bibles, online, sermons, talks, books - have to be willing to dig
-point 4: Genre - different kinds of literature throughout the bible - wisdom/romantic/prophetic/historical/narrative/poetry/apocalyptic/gospels-biographical
-dont mix genres - can get in trouble

-"let us develop a dangerous unselfishness...'if I don't stop and help this man what to him'...don't think 'if I stop and help what will happen to me'" (on The Good Samaritan)
