Daily Devotional: 6/27/2018 - REMEMBER THIS

"Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell." Matthew 10:28

Growing up we are afraid of so much, as we grow these fears grow with us. The fears tend to become more real, they go from being afraid of the dark to being afraid of death. As a college student we are afraid of getting bad grade and how we are able to do everything. As a senior in college, one of my biggest fears now is figuring out what I want to do after college (specially since all my plans go flipped upside down last semester). One thing that usually stays consistent in life is the fear of death. The other day the devil tried to get me off guard with an anxiety attack on this topic (while writing up a devotional). We fear several different aspect of deaths. We fear how it is going to happen, when it is going to happen, will my family be stable, who is going to be effected, what happens when you do die, and will we feel anything. The questions, concerns, and fears go on. We also fear people. It is embedded in our more minds as early as kids. We are taught "stranger danger" since even before we can talk. We are the most destructive species on the planet. We destroy everything. We destroy environment, ecosystem, animals, and ourselves. We are skeptical and on the look out for who has the potential of killing us, and in reality we all have the ability to kill someone. We look for the sketchy people and the ones that look out of place. The thing is we should not fear man. Man is only mortal and we do not have any true power. We have to fear the one that has all the power, and that is God. Proverbs 9:10 says, "The fear of the LORD is beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." When we fear him we get wisdom and strength. We get knowledge and we grow. The fear that we fear in the Lord is not fear of fear, like fearing the dark or dying. This fear is more like fear of a parent, the fear is out of love and trust. We do not want to mess up, we do not want out Heavenly Father to be disappointed, ashamed of us, and even get mad at us. We do not want to get in trouble with him. It is really bad when he gets mad, he has so much power (beyond human belief). He can do some serious damage, he can destroy both body and soul. God determines whether you get eternal life in the light or if we get eternal death in the darkness. We should not be afraid of something that can only destroy the body, we should be afraid of something that has the ability to destroy both body and soul. The body can be healed and fixed, but the soul is irreplaceable. The soul is what we are made of, it is us. I read something the other day, which has nothing to do with this (but kind of does at the same time) it said, "are you living to die, or are you dying to live". You get to choose how to live and what to be afraid of.

"Anyone can take your life, but not what you believe in; no." NF (Remember This)

Lord, thank you for the strength that you give us. You are the almighty all-power God. There is nothing more powerful than you. You have to ability to destroy both body and soul. I pray that you build both our body and soul up with you. I pray that you give us the wisdom to fear you, in order to trust and love you fully. I pray all this in your son's name, Amen.
