And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Colossians 3:17.
This is a verse that is near and dear to my heart. I learned and read about this verse towards the end of last year when I bought a shirt from ActiveFaith. This is the central verse around their company, and one I read it, it became a central verse around my life. As a typical baseball player I wrote this verse on the inside of my hat, on my elbow guard and on the side of my cleats. But I did not do it for my own personal glory, being portrayed as a “perfect Christian.” It was actually the quite opposite, I wrote it on my hat, elbow guard and my cleats because I am not a perfect Christian and I never will be. It is there for a constant reminder that whatever I should do I should do it for the Lord. Baseball is a game of failure and that can be so frustrating at times and we can be filled with fire after a strikeout or after a mistake, but we have to remember who we are playing for. We are not playing for the people in the stands, we are not playing for the people on the field or in the dugout, we are not playing for ourself, but we are playing for God and God only. This is not our game or our talent, but his. Carson Wentz and other Christian athletes preach about the concept of “Audience of One.” So everything you do on the field reflects and goes to Him. Whether you throw a helmet, slam your bat, or curse after making an out or error. You not only look bad in front of your team, but most importantly you look bad in front of God. You have to be able to take failure humbly and with faith that you will learn from it, and that God will allow the next time to show off the talent he blessed you with. This does not only coincide with sports, but most importantly life. We have to do all things with and through God that gives us strength. Whether word or deed, we have to do it in his name. We have to glorify him in all we do. God gave us the breath we breathe, he has given us this body, he has given on the all we have. Without him we literally have nothing. We are all made in the beautiful image of God, we are with him, in him, and are him. We have to be able to reflect his image the best way we can. We have to glorify his grace, mercy, love, and power in all we do. The best way we do that is through word and deed. We have to reflect his image by helping others, by spreading his word, spreading his love, by being with him. No matter what you do, do it in his name. God will guide you through the hard times, just as smoothly as he guides you through the good times. Whether word or deed do it in his name, be able to glorify him in everything you do.
Lord, thank you for everything you do. Thank you for your word, life, breath, and the ability to be up this morning. Thank you for all the talents you blessed us with. We are not all athletes, we are not all talkers, we are not all doers, but you blessed us all with talents that are uniquely molded for us. Allow us to use these talents, our mind and heart for you glory. All things we do are for you and for your glory. Nothing we do is for us, but for you. Allow all we do to glorify your name. I pray this in your son’s glorious awesome name, Amen.
